Water is an essential resource, but the scale of global water consumption needed to produce what we use and consume each day has a dramatic impact around the world.
There is a hidden cost of what we eat, drink and consume, from coffee to t-shirts; food to computers. All the goods we consume each day require a lot water to be grown and processed. Huge amounts of the food we eat and the cotton that make our clothes are now grown and produced in drier parts of the world. The UK now relies on over 60% of its virtual water needs from imports. We need far more water to support our lifestyles than most of us imagine.
Is it time we start thinking about our virtual water footprint?
